Mary Anne Staniszewski opening remarks for Alternative Histories book launch @ Eyebeam

Opening remarks at Eyebeam book launch for new MIT press publication "Alternative Histories" edited by Lauren Rosati and Mary Anne Staniszewski. This book is a presentation the alternative space movement in New York City spanning the years of 1960-2010, and it is also a legacy of Exit Art. HKJB is honored to have been included in this publication.

HKJB was included (along with other groups such as Apartment Show, Silvershed, The Dirty Dirty, Cleopatra's, and Daily Operation) in the exhibition and publication Alternative Histories: New York Art Spaces 1960-2010.

Eyebeam will host the launch and reception for this groundbreaking book — part exhibition catalogue, part cultural history — which documents more than 140 alternative spaces, magazines, and projects, and the significant contributions these organizations have made to the aesthetic and social fabric of New York City. Alternative Histories was developed from an exhibition of the same name at Exit Art (which closed in June 2012) and includes essays by curators and historians, and excerpts of interviews with artists and alternative space founders and staff. Come celebrate New York City's alternative spaces!

Alternative Histories was co-published by Exit Art and The MIT Press.
